We are in a new decade. This is a time to develop new resolutions that will not only improve the quality of your life, but also make you a better person.
To help you draft practical resolutions, below are some healthy tips you should adopt in 2022;
Eat a healthy diet
In 2020, don’t eat food simply because you want to get full and get the energy to do your daily chores. Remember, your health should be your number one priority. Therefore, endeavour to eat a healthy diet which comprises of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and legumes.
Instead of going to your local fast food joint and grabbing some potato chips for lunch, you will do your body a favour if you eat fruits and vegetables as snacks.
By eating healthy, you will minimize the risk of acquiring lifestyle diseases such as cancer, stroke, diabetes, and heat disease.
Consume less salt and sugar
Food without salt can be tasteless. However, excessive consumption of sugar simply means you get a lot of sodium in your body, which in turn leads to increased blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.
Ensure you reduce the intake of salt to 5g per day, which is about one teaspoon. You can easily achieve this by minimizing the intake of salt, soy sauce, fish sauce, and other condiments that are high on sodium.
Also, remember that consuming a lot of sugar can put teeth at risk, and can result in excessive weight gain. Ensure that you reduce your sugar intake to less than 10% of total energy intake. This means that you eat not more than 50g or 12 teaspoons of sugar every day. In fact, the WHO recommends that you eat only 5% of your energy intake. Therefore, limit your cravings for sugary foods such as candies, sugary snacks, and beverages sweetened with free sugars.
If you need to eat foods that will fulfil your addiction for sugar, consider eating fruits with moderation.
Avoid harmful fats
Remember, the fats you consume should not be more than 30% of your energy intake. To achieve this, use unsaturated fats instead of their saturated counterparts.
Unsaturated fats are found in avocados, canola, olive oils, nuts, and fish. The dangerous saturated oils are found in fatty meat, butter, cream, ghee, cream, and lard.
Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol
Well, there is no safe level of alcohol consumption. Nonetheless, since you still have to meet with friends over a bottle of beer once in a while, you don’t have to stop drinking alcohol in 2020. However, to minimize the risk of acquiring lifestyle diseases such as cardiac diseases, live cirrhosis, and cancers, avoid drinking a lot of alcohol.
If you are a smoker, you are at risk of getting diseases such as lung cancer. Also, keep in mind that tobacco doesn’t kill only active smokers, but it also has adverse effects on passive smokers. To protect yourself, your loved once, and make the world a better place for everyone, stop smoking today!
